Welcome Back!

Welcome back to another exciting year! Hopefully everyone had a chance to enjoy some of the amazing summer weather we've been having this year!

Area schools will soon be bustling with students, both excited and nervous about what the new year may entail. Many teachers are already back in their classrooms, busily planning and decorating. Administrators are hard at work ensuring the back-to-school week runs smoothly. In our gifted departments, we have been busy preparing for our CGER (Colorado Gifted Education Review) from the state this October. This review happens every five years, giving us a chance to step back and really look closely at improvements we want to make in our programs. A huge thank you goes out to all of the students, parents, teachers, and administrators who took time last spring to complete our self-evaluation survey. The results give our coordinators validation for all the hard work they put in, as well as possible areas for improvement.

As school gears up, our gifted coordinators will be reaching out to gather input for your child's ALP (Advanced Learning Plan), set up meetings with you and your child, and communicate final plans. If your child is older, there is always the option of allowing them to create their own goals with the help of the gifted coordinator and their teachers. Parents are always provided the opportunity to approve and edit any proposed goals.

We are planning on hosting some parent meetings and book studies again this year. Watch the newsletters for upcoming dates. To begin the year, our Western Slope gifted coordinators have scheduled an amazing speaker to visit our area. Lisa Van Gemert is a nationally renown expert in gifted education. She is a teacher, gifted educator, and mother of gifted children. On Thursday, September 26, Lisa will be presenting a parent presentation in Montrose at 6pm. The following day, she will have a workshop for teachers to help them better understand gifted students in their classroom. The parent event will be well worth your time! Put it on the calendar now to save the date!

Here's to the best school year ever!
